He began his study of karate in Ibaraki Pref, Japan, in 1984 at the age of 15. In 1988, he moved to Tokyo to attend Chuo University and trained at the Onshikan Dojo in Kodaira City, where he earned his 1st-degree black belt in 1997. In 1998, he was transferred to Hong Kong for work and continued his training at SKI dojo there. He immigrated to Canada in 2004.
