Seminar, Exam and Goodwill Juniors Tournament

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, North Vancouver Shidokan hosted a special event featuring a seminar led by Sensei Don Sharp, 7th Dan JKA. We were honoured by the presence of our head instructor, Sensei Michael Doherty, 6th Dan JKA, along with other JKA BC technical directors.

Following the open class, we held a kyu (coloured belt) examination, giving our members and visiting students the opportunity to grade for their next belt.

The day concluded with a goodwill tournament for junior students, where Senpais served as judges and students had the chance to test their skills in a spirit of friendly competition. The event aimed to foster camaraderie and help prepare participants for upcoming provincial and national tournaments.

In the event participated members of the following Dojos:

  • Valley Shidokan
  • Kelowna Karate & Fitness Inc
  • Dunbar Karate Club
  • Tsawwassen Dojo
  • JKA Vancouver

Breaking the Fortress

Basai Dai’s english translation roughly means “Breaking the Fortress”. Sensei Don Sharp from Chilliwack came out to the shore for a special occasion and gave everyone a run through of one of our cornerstone katas. For me I always try to imagine my enemies are 8′ tall and over 300 lbs. Helps to make the movements look genuine!

Afterwards, there was a celebration for 2 of our Sensei’s who turned a combined 140 years old this month.
