Frequently Asked Questions
Is there “fighting”?
At the beginners’ level, the only forms of kumite (sparring) practiced are basic, pre-arranged patterns of attack and defense. Free sparring (jiyu kumite) is only practiced by intermediate and advanced students, and is done on a “non-contact” basis.
Do I have to buy a uniform?
New students are discouraged from buying a uniform until they have trained for a few weeks and can judge whether they will wish to continue with karate training. Students are, however, expected to purchase a uniform before taking their first examination (which is usually after 3 or 4 months).
Can I come and watch a class?
Yes. Alternatively, prospective students are welcome to actually try a class without any obligation.
